Current standards

Switching devices are classified according to Utilization Category, or Category of Duty, thus:-

Fuses (EN 60269)
The harmonized European standard for fuses is EN 60269:Low-voltage fuses (IEC 60269:Low-voltage fuses) covering fuses incorporating enclosed current-limiting fuse links. It is divided into the following sections:-

  • EN 60269-1 (IEC 60269): General requirements
  • EN 60269-2 (IEC 60269): Supplementary requirements for fuses for use by authorized persons (fuses mainly for industrial application)
  • EN 60269-3 (IEC 60269-3): Supplementary requirements for fuses for use by unskilled persons (fuses mainly for household and similar applications)
  • IEC 60269-4: Fuse links for the protection of semiconductor devices

Switchgear and Controlgear (EN 60947)
EN 60947: Specification for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear is divided into the following seven sections:-

  • EN 60947-1: General rules
  • EN 60947-2: Circuit-breakers
  • EN 60947-3: Switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units
  • EN 60947-4: Contactors and motor starters
  • EN 60947-5: Control-circuit devices and switching elements
  • EN 60947-6: Multiple function equipment
  • EN 60947-7: Ancillary equipment
